_ Australian domains or dot com domains - what's best for small business ?
If you are runnning a small busines in Australia is it better to have an Australian domain or a "dot com domain" ? Most Australian businesses prefer to have a "dot au" website and righly so, but in some instances dot coms are the better choice. The pros and cons are given below.
Australian domains for small business with ABN
In most instances small Australian businesses with a physical presence in the local market and no interest in international markets should take a dot au. The most significant reasons are preferential treatment by the search engines and a clear identification of the regional operation of the business. Hosting does not necessarily have to be in Australia as long as access times are favorable and international support is good enough. For our purposes Weebly has passed the test and hence we take our Domains from Crazydomains and then host with Weebly. Learn more at Free Hosting of Australian Domains with Weebly.
Dot com domains for small business and individuals without an ABN
Australian domain names require an Australian Tax File number. Australian Internet businesses with a dot com do quite well in the Australian market segment and do better in the global market. For those who prefer a better deals with larger international hosting companies complexity increases and costs because dot au's are not offered by international hosting
For an international audience a "dot com" domain carries more authority and is clearly the first choice.
Furthermore the Asia / Pacific market can well be targeted by including
"Australia" or "-au" in the page names and page content. Australia's major cities are a good SEO terms, that create SEO relevance. 80 % of all Australians live in the 6 major cities of Melbourne, Perth, Adelaide, Sydney, Brisbane and Darwin.
International visitors are often searching country specific content. Here for
example is a personal Australian travel website, that gets excellent website
traffic statistics. I think below we have a great example to prove the point.
A dot com Website about the Australian outback created by a German
Birgit Bradtke is a young German lady, who came to Australia to be with her
boyfriend, but found a new love instead, the Kimberleys in Australia's outback.
She has become a successful travel author by self publishing to her 2 websites.
And she keeps doing what she loves most, travelling the Australian outback.
Birgit is a successful writer on Australian outback travel and a passionate
person living her dreams. Hence her website is a must visit, especially if you
don't want to read commercial spin and learn from a fellow traveler who has
been there and done it.
My personal preference is dot com. Dot com’s are cheaper, do great in SEO
internationally and well enough in Australia. Generally dot au’s dominate the
top 10 search results on “Google Australia” searches because many businesses,
especially large ones want local hosting and prefer to be known as Australian
business and hence take out “com.au” sites, but for home business and small
business do com is quite appropriate as long as the SEO results are fine.
