Evaluating Aquaponics activities in Australia, Victoria and the rest of the world
Currently (2014) there remains potential for limited sales volume in mainly hobby farm type market. The climate specific knowledge base in Victoria could also benefit from extensions. So far there are pilot programs in place and some operators have failed. to catch a wider audience. New entrants could consider an alliance with Murray Hallam. For momentum we should look at hydroponics as well. It will take considerable effort and an alliance to succeed.

Howdy. I came to ap 3 1/2 yrs ago via Joel's segment shown on the telly. I built a proof of concept system using an old spa and some cut down blue barrels. Silver Perch were my fish of choice. I used aquarium heaters to keep them warm and my vegies growing over winter.
I used basic loop siphons and the system worked a treat. After this, I built a 7m by 5m greenhouse with 7000lts of fishtanks in my garage.
The system produced an abundance of fresh, healthy food and lots of happy, healthy fish. It was then I decided to get serious about the aquaponics field.
In January this year, I attended the 4 day Aquaponics Asia seminar in Brisbane. Keynote Speaker was Dr James Rakocy from the University of Virgin Islands, (UVI.) UVI are the global leaders in aquaponic research and Dr Rakocy is the leader in this field. I was one of only two people outside Queensland in Australia to attend this seminar!
I have since leased retail space at 50 Gordon Avenue in Geelong West. This site is a dedicated aquaponic display/sales site. It is the first dedicated retail site on the eastern seaboard. We have several of Murray's Kits on display. I believe them to be the best kits available for home aquaponic production. The kits are made from long lasting fibreglass and have very few potential failure points. I will post regular updates (no holds barred) in the Off The Shelf section, to keep people informed regarding the performance of each display kit.
I will be a regular contributor to the forum and welcome your questions. I urge all prospective aquaponicists to do some cursory reading regarding fish species, (Google is our friend!) It will save heart break down the track.
