With my retirement in mid 2015 I had that strong drive to escape the Melbourne winter. And so in 2016 we have travelled from Melbourne to Airlie Beach in 2016 with an old station wagon Ford Futura and a tent to visit our daughter in QLD. Thereafter in 2017 and 2018 Queensland again. In 2018 we travelled with a Jayco Ducato FD19 campervan, which thanks to solar power allows us to do free camping and going off the grid with good lighting, fridge,TV.
Australia if great for camping in national parks, but often access is via dust road (unsealed surfaces and hire campervans are usually not permitted to travel on dust roads. But plenty of rest stops along Australia's highways are a great way to get free overnight accommodation. Some are really nice and the WikiCamps app is the way to go to find the best sites. Mobile internet reception is likely to fade out between townships in QLD. Hence in remote areas we usually pick rest spots in small townships or nearby highway rest stops.
