In 2016 we travelled from Melbourne to Qld Airlie Beach with a tent to see our daughter in Airlie Beach. Thereafter in 2017 and 2018 Queensland again. In 2018 we finally bought this beauty of a campervan on the left (Jayco FD19, Ducato based), which allows us some free off grid camping with the comforts of great lighting, fridge and TV and cooking with gas. Whether travelling in a station wagon or a proper RV , plenty of rest stops along Australia's highways are a great way to get free overnight accommodation and on the next day move on fast to the next destination. Some are really nice and WikiCamps is the way to go to find the best. Mobile internet reception is likely to fade out between townships in QLD. Hence in remote areas we usually pick rest spots in or near these townships.

Best time to travel Australia (season): Northern summer = Australian winter, as well as spring and autumn !
Never travel in JANUARY (Australian Summer school holidays). It's too hot and crowded and twice as expensive !
