Good used camper vans (say 7 years old) under $40k are hard if not impossible to find. Why not get a brand new primitive set up for that money or even something better for not much more ? Or why not buy a brand new frontline camper for $65k plus ? A decent professional conversion costs between $20k and $40k and a new vehicle costs $40k plus.
I was looking for a fuel economic diesel with a decent sized bed and a lift up tail gate. Why not deck one out yourself ? Buy the vehicle you like, ideally with a cargo space of 1.90 to 2.40 m. Use plastic tubs for your gear for starters. Choose between a blow up mattress or a bed frame. Use rails and boards for max flexibility. That way you can fold up your bed and put your camping chairs into the van and create a table for a rainy or windy day. Use a small cooker with gas cartridges or a spirit based cooker. Don't use big gas bottles, they need fixtures and certificates. Add an icebox or a refrigerator if needed. Add solar panels and an inverter if needed. Add an aircon if needed. Don't spend $ 8000 on a pop top roof. Buy a $1000 annex instead or fly screens for your doors. Cook in the annex and dress there as well. Carry a portaloo and use glazed Windows or curtains.
A great van to buy is the VW caddy maxi crew van. Here is why. Costs under $40000. Lots of room and foldable / removable back seats and comes with barn doors and weighs only about 1.5 tons. Fuel consumption Diesel ca 8l per 100km.
If you need a 4 wheel drive then the game changes. I would recommend another van, but that's a different story (wait for next blog).
